Christian Community Action

Christian Community Action, Inc. is a not-for-profit ecumenical social service organization located in New Haven, Connecticut. Its mission is to express faithful witness by:

  • providing emergency food, housing and support to those who are poor in New Haven,
  • encouraging them in their efforts to attain self-sufficiency, and
  • working to change systems that perpetuate poverty and injustice.

Other programs offered by CCA include after-school programs and a childrenŐs summer program, fuel assistance and food basket distribution at Thanksgiving to more than 1,000 families.

Now in its third decade of service, CCA continues to be a force for community building and social change.

Community Dining Room

The Community Dining Room serves the community by feeding the hungry and helping with basic human needs through referrals and fellowship. We strive to promote public awareness of the impact of hunger and isolation in our society. Founded in 1985, the Community Dining Room (CDR) is a private, not-for-profit organization providing food, support and companionship to our shoreline neighbors. The CDR is located in the Volunteer Services Centeron Harrison Avenue, which allows space for an expanded home delivery program and an evening family dinner.

Community Soup Kitchen

Community Soup Kitchen is a non-profit agency that provides free, nutritious meals to anyone in need. The Soup Kitchen receives no city, state or federal money for our operation. We rely upon the community to support our mission. We have been in operation since 1977. In 2005, together with our associates at the Saint Thomas More Wednesday Soup Kitchen and the Saint Luke’s Lunch Program for Women and Children, and our five breakfast sites, we provided 54,512 meals. We also act as a host site for the Hill Health Center who offers health services to our guests. We also act as a work site for clients of American Retarded Citizens.

Connecticut Food Bank (CFB)

Connecticut Food Bank (CFB) is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger. We strive to do this by supplying food products and resources to eligible programs throughout our service area in Connecticut, and by promoting public awareness about the problem of hunger.

Founded in 1982, CFB is the largest centralized source of donated, emergency food in Connecticut. The main warehouse is located in East Haven, with branch warehouses in Waterbury and Fairfield, and distribution sites in New London and Stamford.

CFB provides food to 650 food- assistance programs such as soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries, and adult and child day care centers in six of Connecticut’s eight counties: Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London and Windham.

In 2006, CFB distributed 15.9 million pounds of food. Since 1982, CFB has distributed 156 million pounds of food.

The Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen

The mission of the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (D.E.S.K.) is to provide free, nutritious meals for homeless individuals, families, and the working and non-working poor of the Greater New Haven area. D.E.S.K. serves hot evening meals, packs free bag lunches, stocks food pantry bags, and maintains an emergency food bank for people in crisis.
